The Lady Ain’t No Tramp – C&K weekend away.

LE1Spoiler alert!

There are no recipes contained within this post. None. We left Brisbane at 6am on Saturday morning and got back at 9pm Monday night, so nobody is cooking here, not for us, not for you. Thanks Charlie and Rob (the in-laws) for a great dinner and rest stop on the way home.

Lady Elliot Island is situated at the bottom of the great barrier reef. I happened along there this long weekend with my two favourite ladies (sorry mum), Kid and the Doctor.LE3

It’s our first threesome away and had been building up for a while. After a 3 hour drive to Harvey  Bay, then a one hour flight in what seemed more like  a Tarago with wings than anything designed to be airborne, we arrived at our amazing destination. 2 nights on a secluded coral island and the expectation of seeing some manta rays in the wild had us all heady with anticipation.LE2

We weren’t disappointed. The weather wasn’t as clement as we’d have liked, making the snorkelling hard going but well worth while. Whilst Kid and I are not experienced at all with snorkelling you can’t accuse of not being outdoorsy types, and it’s great to step outside your boundaries sometimes. We saw a manta ray swim directly underneath us on day two, and that wasn’t even the highlight. Wildlife was everywhere.LE7

What Kid Did

Kid was awesome company all weekend and up for anything. Snorkelling in big swell, walking the entire girth of the Island, laying on the airstrip at night spotting stars and making up constellations. Looking for shells and old coral to build towers. Exploring the shallow lagoons for starfish, clams and bright schools of fish. And something called a nudibranch (google it.) Our coolest find was an old anchor, one like Popeye would have tattooed on his forearm, nestled in sand and barnacles about 10 metres below us. And turtles. And other kid friends.LE4

I have to say we were  happily surprised at the level of the catering and ate our way through a wicked buffet at each meal. Good fresh, hearty fare to feed hungry mouths and bodies worn out from a day in the ocean. I was expecting tinned peas and carrots. I’m sure we all know how traumatic rubbish food on holidays can be. Especially with nowhere else to go.LE5

Kid meditates, I meditate and Doctor really meditates and we all found a good spot to do our own thing from time to time. On the last morning the weather was our friend  and we managed a good snorkel in clear, bright waters before boarding the ‘Tarago’ again and braving the end-of-long-weekend Bruce Highway home. My highlight, btw, was snorkelling and holding hands with Kid. Flipping along together and pointing at the myriad creatures and coral together. LE8

This is no advertisement for Lady Elliot Island,  rather a reminder that getting away and trying new activities together (particularly with an outdoorsy feel) is important for connecting with the people you love and forgetting the day-to-day biz, much like cooking and eating together can be. You don’t need to fly anywhere or battle great sea creatures for this. It’s easy to do.LE9

Just make sure there’s a good view. 😉
